A symbolically crucial episode in the war some 97,000 volumes were destroyed including a number of irreplacable works of significant value to Tamil culture, including the works of Ananda Coomaraswamy. President Rajapaksa, in trying to distance his government from the atrocity said "Burning the Library sacred to the people of Jaffna was similar to shooting down Lord Buddha". February 2012.
